US tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico to be paused for 30 days

Washington, DC: President Donald Trump has said that he has obtained additional pledges from Canada and Mexico to strengthen border security, and as a result, US tariffs on imports from these two nations will be suspended for 30 days.

Trump claimed to have spoken with his colleagues in Canada and Mexico, which prompted the halt before the tariffs went into force on Tuesday.

Trump declared duties of 25 percent on Canadian and Mexican imports and an extra 10 percent on Chinese products on Saturday.

Trump has criticized Canada and Mexico for not doing enough to combat illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking, and he said that he wants to negotiate an even stronger agreement with both countries during the one-month timeframe.

“It is my duty as President to protect the safety of EVERY American, and I am doing precisely that. After meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump said on his Truth Social platform, “I am very pleased with this initial outcome.”

In an X post, Trudeau claimed to have had a “good call” with Trump. To strengthen border security, the prime minister unveiled a proposal of 1.3 billion Canadian dollars ($901 million).

“I just spoke with President Trump on the phone. Our $1.3 billion border strategy is being carried out by Canada, which includes bolstering the border with more staff, technology, and helicopters, improving cooperation with our U.S. allies, and increasing resources to halt the flow of fentanyl. “The border is being and will continue to be protected by nearly 10,000 frontline personnel,” Trudeau said.

Furthermore, Canada is committing to establishing a Canada-US Joint Strike Force to fight organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering, designating a Fentanyl Czar, designating cartels as terrorist organizations, and maintaining round-the-clock border security. In addition, I issued a new intelligence order against fentanyl and organized crime, which we will support with $200 million.

“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau said.

In a post on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the United States is halting tariffs for a month.

Sheinbaum said that in an attempt to combat drug trafficking, her nation would deploy 10,000 soldiers to its northern border.

She said that as part of their deal, Trump’s government promised to work to stop the flow of powerful weapons to Mexico.

In a Truth Social post, Trump claimed to have had a “very friendly conversation” with the president of Mexico, during which she committed to deploying 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border between Mexico and the United States right now.

“These troops will be particularly assigned to halt the entry of illegal immigration and fentanyl into our nation. We also decided to immediately put a one-month hold on the planned tariffs.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and senior Mexican representatives will lead the discussions, according to Trump.

“I look forward to participating in those negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two countries,” said Trump.
