Ukrainian Air Force launches major missile attack on Dnipro city with Russian ICBM

Ukraine: Russia conducted a huge intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) strike on the city of Dnipro, according to the Ukrainian Air Force on Thursday. It also stated that a variety of missiles were used in the attack, including seven Kh-101 cruise missiles fired from Tu-95MS strategic bombers in the Volgograd region, an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the Astrakhan region of Russia, and a Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missile fired from a MiG-31K fighter jet in the Tambov region.

“On the morning of November 21, 2024, between 5:00 and 7:00, Russian troops attacked the city of Dnipro (enterprises and critical infrastructure) with missiles of various types,” the Ukrainian Air Force declared in a statement posted on its Telegram account.

It added, “In particular, an intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation, a Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missile from a MiG-31K fighter jet was launched from the Tambov region, and seven Kh-101 cruise missiles were fired from Tu-95MS strategic bombers (launch area: Volgograd region).”

The Ukrainian Air Force said that six Kh-101 missiles were destroyed by anti-aircraft missile troops as a consequence of anti-aircraft warfare.

It further said that no victim information has been received as of yet. “We urge people to avoid delaying air warning signals once again! Additionally, we urge all bloggers and media outlets to appropriately disseminate information on the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s combat operations and potential dangers to the Ukrainian state,” the Air Force said.

A notable example of a long-range weapon is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which fires into space before releasing one or more warheads that reenter the atmosphere and fall on their targets. According to the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, they are thought to have a minimum range of 5,500 kilometers (3,400 miles), although certain models can go significantly farther—more than 9,000 kilometers.

The Soviet Union launched the first ICBM rocket in 1957, while the United States did the same in 1959.

In the meantime, Ukraine will get non-persistent anti-personnel landmines from the United States to help defend against Russian assaults, the U.S. stated Wednesday. The provision of anti-personnel landmines is a reaction to Russia’s military advances in eastern Ukraine, according to US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

Notably, press sources claimed that US President Joe Biden had approved the supply of anti-personnel landmines to Ukraine.

Miller said, “So I can confirm that we are providing the Ukrainian government with non-persistent anti-personnel landmines,” at a news conference at the US State Department on Wednesday. For the first time, we are giving them anti-personnel landmines, although we have been giving them anti-tank landmines for a while.”

“I think it’s important to note a few things about this new provision of equipment to the Ukrainians,” he said. One is that, as the Secretary has said repeatedly, we constantly modify our rules in response to actual occurrences. These non-persistent anti-personnel landmines are intended to impede Russian infantry advances, particularly those in eastern Ukraine, which are the real-world events that we have seen. Compared to the landmines set by the Russians and those used by various forces, including our own, decades ago, they are much different.
