In order to ensure a comprehensive probe, Jaiswal said that the Indian High Commission and consulates are in communication with the families and local authorities.

“Unfortunate events have struck Canada in the last week or two. There have been three horrific murders of Indian students. These horrific catastrophes that have befallen our Canadian citizens sadden us. We offer the bereaved families our sincerest sympathies.

Our Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver, as well as our High Commission in Ottawa, are in communication with the families and offering whatever assistance that they can. For a comprehensive inquiry into these instances, they are in contact with the local authorities,” Jaiswal said.

“It is still crucial for Indian people, especially students, to be safe, secure, and happy in Canada. For their safety and well-being, our Consulates and High Commission in Ottawa communicate with local authorities. Because of the increasing number of hate crimes and criminal violence occurrences, we have also issued an alert for our citizens and Indian students to exercise great care and be cautious in the face of Canada’s worsening security climate,” he added.

The MEA has issued an advice alerting the Indian community in Canada about the situation there, Jaiswal said.

In Canada, there are around 4.5 lakh Indian students. Canada accounts for the bulk of Indian students studying overseas. In addition, there is a sizable Indian population in Canada. A long ago, we warned Indians in Canada about the grave situation there in an advice.

Regarding rumors of Indian visas being granted to Canadians, Jaiswal said that the Canadian media is defaming India and that visa issuance is a national concern.

“We have seen media reports about this,” Jaiswal said. This is just another instance of the misinformation campaign against India by Canadian media. It is our sovereign duty to provide Indian visas, and we have the right to refuse visas to anybody who threatens our territorial integrity. The Canadian media’s comments on this issue is comparable to foreign meddling in India’s internal affairs.

The death of Indian citizen Harshandeep Singh, who was shot and killed in Edmonton on December 6, was mourned by the Indian Consulate General in Vancouver.

Notably, the Toronto Sun reported that two people, Judith Saulteaux and Evan Rain, both thirty years old, were taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in relation to Singh’s death on Friday in a central Edmonton apartment complex.
