Sri Lanka: The bogus reports that Sri Lanka’s attempt to join the BRICS grouping has been turned down were denied by the Russian embassy in Sri Lanka.

“The Embassy noticed the misleading article regarding Sri Lanka’s bid for BRICS membership, which was published in the “Sunday Island” on November 9, 2024.”.

“The Embassy wants to draw attention to Sri Lanka’s application to become a member of BRICS. Sri Lanka’s involvement was welcomed by the Russian BRICS Chairship, according to the press release.

The Russian Embassy said that after thorough discussion and agreement, BRICS will take Sri Lanka’s proposal into consideration in due time. The offers from the many other nations that have also applied would be taken into consideration.

Notably, a number of nations have recently shown interest in joining the BRICS alliance. These include, among other countries, Malaysia and Thailand.

The Russian Embassy went on to say, “The local media reports that Sri Lanka’s application has been rejected are incorrect.”

From October 22 to 24, the 16th BRICS Summit was held in Kazan, Russia.

Following the leaders of China, India, and Russia’s 2006 G8 Outreach Summit conference in St. Petersburg, the official BRIC alliance was established.

The alliance was established in 2006 during the inaugural BRIC foreign ministers’ conference, which took place outside the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In 2009, the inaugural BRIC Summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

At the 2010 BRIC Foreign Ministers’ conference in New York, it was decided to turn BRIC into BRICS by adding South Africa. In 2011, South Africa went to Sanya for the third BRICS summit.

With the addition of five additional members in 2024—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—BRICS continued to grow.

With the inclusion of new members last year, BRICS has expanded its inclusiveness and agenda for the global good, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

India has often said that it puts a lot of confidence in multilateral organizations like BRICS.

“India values the close cooperation within BRICS which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, building resilient supply chains, promoting cultural and people to people connect, among others,” Prime Minister Modi had previously stated.
