PTI founder Imran Khan’s acquittal plea in GHQ attack case rejected
Rawalpindi: According to ARY News, Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was denied acquittal in the May 9 General Headquarters (GHQ) assault case by Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).
Imran Khan’s acquittal petition in the May 9 case was considered by the Rawalpindi ATC court on Monday. Imran Khan’s acquittal appeal was denied by the ATC court after the prosecution concluded its arguments, according to ARY News.
The case trial has begun, and the testimony of twelve witnesses has been recorded, the prosecutor informed ARY News. He said that it is inadmissible to hear the acquittal plea at this point.
Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was introduced in court earlier on January 25 as the hearing of the May 9th GHQ assault case proceeded at Adiala Jail, according to ARY News.
Another development was the approval of the defense attorneys’ plea to allow Imran Khan’s family members to attend the trial.
But the prosecution objected to Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, being allowed to attend the GHQ trial. The prosecution said that she had previously been sentenced and found guilty in another instance. The prosecution claims that a convicted individual is not permitted by law to attend a subsequent trial.
In addition, the defense attorneys requested that all 13 instances pertaining to the May 9 event be combined.
Following Imran Khan’s imprisonment on May 9, 2023, violent confrontations broke out in Pakistan. The arrest of the party founder infuriated PTI activists, who staged rallies in both large and distant towns. To maintain law and order, the military forces were called in by Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
PTI workers’ demonstrations resulted in attacks on Army sites, including the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore. Notably, the primary defendant in the May 9 riots case is Imran Khan.
