Powerful earthquake of 5.9 magnitude hits Darwin, Australia
Darwin: On Tuesday, a powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Banda Sea, off the Australian coast of Darwin. The 62 km depth is where the seismic event was found.
After the earthquake, the Bureau of Meteorology said that “there was no threat of a tsunami to Australia”. Nearly 300 people reported feeling the earthquakes to Geoscience Australia.
Significant seismic activity was detected in the Banda Sea on Monday evening at 7:54 p.m., just after a smaller, magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred in Victoria’s Gippsland area.
This earthquake’s epicenter occurred in Sandy Point, not far from Wilsons Promontory, some 190 kilometers southeast of Melbourne.
