The NCS said in a statement on X that “EQ of M: 5.2, On: 27/03/2025 13:58:21 IST, Lat: 36.32 N, Long: 71.08 E, Depth: 180 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

The magnitude 4.6 earthquake that struck earlier in the day was followed by this one.

In a message to X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 27/03/2025 08:38:19 IST, Lat: 36.36 N, Long: 70.93 E, Depth: 160 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake had previously rocked the area on March 23.

“EQ of M: 4.2, On: 23/03/2025 11:50:29 IST, Lat: 36.31 N, Long: 71.05 E, Depth: 138 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” according to the NCS.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reports that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 occurred in Afghanistan on Friday, March 21.

According to NCS data, the earthquake happened 160 kilometers below the surface.

In a message to X, NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.9, On: 21/03/2025 01:00:57 IST, Lat: 36.48 N, Long: 71.45 E, Depth: 160 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Afghanistan is still very susceptible to landslides, earthquakes, and seasonal floods, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

According to UNOCHA, these frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan harm vulnerable populations who are already struggling with decades of underdevelopment and violence, making them less equipped to handle many shocks at once.

According to the Red Cross, Afghanistan has a history of strong earthquakes, and the Hindu Kush Mountain range is a geologically active region where quakes happen often.

In addition to a fault line that passes straight through Herat, Afghanistan is situated on other fault lines that connect the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

When an earthquake occurs, both its magnitude and depth are significant; shallow earthquakes do more damage than deeper ones. Unfortunately, since the tectonic plates in the area often slide past one another rather than meeting directly, Afghanistan is vulnerable to these shallow earthquakes.
