North Korean Army: Will completely cut off road and rail links to South Korea, and strengthen border areas
North Korean: According to official media KCNA, the North Korean Army said that it would reinforce the territories on its side of the border and totally block off highways and railroads connecting to South Korea beginning on Wednesday, October 9.
The declaration signals a continuation of the recent, until this year, uncommon increase in activity along the line dividing the two Koreas.
Despite mishaps, North Korea has been erecting barricades and landmines along the closely guarded border for months this year, according to a July statement from South Korea’s military.
In a statement obtained by KCNA, the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army stated that this was in response to war games fought in South Korea, which it described as “the primary hostile state and invariable principal enemy,” as well as regular visits by US strategic nuclear assets in the area.
