Nicole Kidman plays one of the most glamorous roles of her career in the upcoming film ‘Babygirl’
In the new movie ‘Babygirl,’ actress Nicole Kidman will portray Romy, a strong CEO who is on a sexual and self-discovery journey. This is one of the most compelling parts she has ever played.
Kidman reflected on her experience with the movie, saying she was immediately drawn in by the title when director Halina Reijn revealed it.
“The title is fantastic. That’s why I said, ‘Oh! I’d want to be a Babygirl!'” in a Deadline interview.
Kidman was “completely sort of hypnotized” by the film’s “very modern look at women’s sexuality,” as well as its examination of authenticity and desire, after reading the screenplay.
With Kidman receiving the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and most recently the National Board of Review’s NBR Award for Best Actress, “Babygirl,” which opens in cinemas on December 25, has already garnered a lot of attention.
Romy, a powerful CEO of a packaging firm, uses an AI system she developed to drive the plot of the movie. Despite seeming to have it all—a handsome husband (played by Antonio Banderas), two adolescent kids, and an opulent lifestyle—Romy struggles with her identity and ambitions.
She has an affair with Samuel (Harris Dickinson), an intern who wants to be her mentor, as a result of her quest for sexual fulfillment. According to Deadline, the film’s central theme is their developing friendship, which questions conventional gender dynamics in sexual thrillers.
“It’s uncommon to have the protagonist be female, and only her story followed,” Kidman stated, revealing that her part is unique in that it centers on a female protagonist. You don’t adhere to anybody else’s.
She also emphasized how “Babygirl” offers a story of strength and discovery rather from the typical stereotype of “punishing” the woman for her wants.
Kidman said, “It’s her exploration and it’s her journey,” adding, “Halina is totally committed to the female journey in this film, but not in a tortuous way,” in an interview with Deadline.
Kidman found the film’s reworking of the sexual thriller genre, which is often dominated by male viewpoints, especially interesting since it tells the story from the female gaze.
Reijn, a well-known producer and director, drew inspiration from sensual thrillers like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction from the 1980s and 1990s.
“Halina has always had the idea of doing a thriller from that genre and making it with the female gaze,” added Kidman.
“It was really at this stage in my life to go: ‘This came out of nowhere and I’ve never experienced anything like it, probably never will again,'” she said, reflecting on her performance in “Babygirl.”
Kidman praised the director’s obsessive commitment to the project and said working with Reijn has been a life-changing experience.
“It’s great that she is both the director and the writer. “Yes, she has a lot of control,” Kidman said, adding that she works around the clock, seven days a week. I adore her.
Kidman’s long-standing dedication to collaborating with female directors and writers was in line with this partnership.
Apart from “Babygirl,” Kidman has contributed to other female-directed films, such as Mimi Cave’s “Welcome To Holland” and Lulu Wang’s limited drama “Expats.”
