Nine people were killed and nine others were wounded in six traffic incidents that happened in Karachi in the last 24 hours, according to Ary News. Notably, big trucks such as oil tankers, trailers, and dumpers were involved in the incidents.
According to Ary News, which cited the traffic police, 32 incidents involving high traffic occurred in the first six days of February alone.
Ten trailer accidents killed twelve people, while three dumper accidents killed five. The traffic police also reported that 13 people were killed in 13 truck accidents.
Other events included one oil tanker accident that killed one person and five water tanker mishaps that killed eight people.
A four-member committee has been established to look into the causes of the increasing number of accidents occurring in the city.
490 drivers have been detained and 34,655 challans have been issued by the traffic police.
According to an Asian Development Bank (ADB) research, Pakistan’s road safety has worsened due to a history of weak federal and provincial leadership and administration.
According to the ADB assessment, deaths are predicted to rise by at least 33% by 2030 unless the government takes decisive action.
It also pointed out that road design and operation in metropolitan areas continue to prioritize cars, with inadequate safety requirements for bicycles, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and three-wheeler passengers.
The assessment also emphasized the many uncontrolled entry points to high-speed arterial roads, high-speed crossings, the network’s limited use of road signs and markings, and the insufficient use of tried-and-true safety features like traffic signals and roundabouts.
