G-20 leading economies summit in Brazil discussed global challenges and crises
Brazil: The “G20 Riode Janeiro Leaders’ Declaration,” which addressed significant global issues and crises, was released during the summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in Brazil. With a focus on the establishment of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, it gave priority to initiatives aimed at attaining tangible outcomes in the battle against hunger and poverty.
The statement, which was released on Monday (local time), emphasized the setback that COVID-19 caused to the battle against poverty and hunger and urged a stronger and more effective commitment to combating the twin evils.
“There is more than enough food produced worldwide to end hunger.
In light of this, we have established the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty and applaud its creative approach to raising funds and exchanging knowledge to support the implementation of nation-led, nation-owned, large-scale, and evidence-based programs aimed at reducing hunger and poverty globally. Together, we do not lack the knowledge or resources to combat poverty and end hunger,” the declaration stated.
The global alliance was emphasized, and all nations, international organizations, multilateral development banks, knowledge centers, and philanthropic institutions were invited to step up efforts to end poverty and hunger while lowering inequality and reviving international collaborations for sustainable development.
In its battle against hunger and poverty, the coalition will use tried-and-true methods including cash transfers, creating in-house school feeding programs, expanding access to microfinance, and more, according to the proclamation.
“The Alliance champions proven strategies such as cash transfers, development of homegrown school feeding programs, improving access to microfinance and the formal financial system and social protection, among other strategies that can be adapted to each country’s national circumstances,” the statement read.
In addition, the declaration highlighted the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip and the escalation in Lebanon” as well as “the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and to reinforce the protection of civilians and demand the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale.”
The G20 statement, which recalled talks in New Delhi, specifically named the “human suffering and negative added impacts of the war with regard to global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation and growth” in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.
“We welcome all relevant and constructive initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace, upholding all the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter for the promotion of peaceful, friendly, and good neighborly relations among nations,” it said.
G20 Prior to this, Luiz Inacia Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, established an international coalition to combat hunger and poverty.
Lula lamented poverty and hunger during the event and urged authorities to accept responsibility for speedy success.
The Global South was badly affected by the food, fuel, and fertilizer problems brought on by the continuing hostilities, thus PM Modi also praised Brazil’s proposal to build a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, emphasizing that their issues should take precedence.
“We support Brazil’s “Global Alliance against hunger and poverty” effort. “This is a significant step in putting the Deccan High Level Food Security Principles, which were adopted at the New Delhi Summit, into practice,” he said.
