Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed condolences on the demise of Manmohan Singh
Ottawa: On Thursday (local time), former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed his sorrow at the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Harper recalled Singh in a post on X (previously Twitter), calling him a leader of “exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom.”
“I regret to inform you of the demise of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a former colleague of mine. He was a man of extraordinary insight, honesty, and brilliance. Harper added, “Laureen and I would like to express our condolences to all of his family and friends.”
At the age of 92, former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Singh, who was India’s 13th prime minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away from age-related illnesses earlier in the evening after suddenly losing consciousness at home. AIIMS stated in a statement that he was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM despite resuscitation attempts.
In his accolades, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken again emphasized Singh’s crucial contribution to enhancing ties between the US and India.
“The United States extends our deepest sympathies to the Indian people on the loss of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh,” Blinken said in a statement. One of the strongest supporters of the strategic alliance between the United States and India, Dr. Singh’s efforts set the groundwork for much of what our nations have achieved together over the last 20 years.
Blinken gave Singh a lot of credit for his leadership, highlighting his efforts to promote economic reforms in India and strengthen connections between the US and India.
“His leadership in advancing the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signified a major investment in the potential of the US-India relationship,” Blinken said, referring to Singh’s involvement in the historic US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. Dr. Singh’s economic reforms, which fueled India’s explosive economic development, will be recognized at home. We lament Dr. Singh’s loss and will never forget his commitment to strengthening ties between India and the United States.”
Manmohan Singh was a renowned politician and economist who was born in Punjab in 1932. Throughout his remarkable career, he had two terms as Prime Minister of India, where he significantly influenced the country’s foreign policy and economic policies. Singh served a remarkable 33 years in the Rajya Sabha before retiring earlier this year.
