Four Norwegian skiers died in the Val-Cenis section of the Savoie region of the French Alps, according to the local prefecture, the French daily Le Dauphine Libere, and broadcaster TF1.

Four of the seven skiers were carried away by a huge avalanche that occurred while they were on an off-piste excursion. A lady who had been taken to a hospital in Grenoble was subsequently declared dead, while three more remains were found at the site.

A separate avalanche at Vallorcine, north of the Mont Blanc range, claimed the life of a Swiss skier in the meanwhile. According to the public prosecutor quoted in the journal Le Figaro, she was traveling with her father and brother when the avalanche struck. Her sibling was transported to the hospital for evaluation, but the 30-year-old’s father was unhurt.

The Haute-Savoie prefecture has warned of an increased danger of avalanches.
Another British skier, 55, was killed Tuesday after being trapped in an avalanche in the Mont Blanc area.
