Donald Trump: If Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on the US, the US will raise its tariffs too
Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump said that the US will raise its tariffs to a comparable level if Canada imposes retaliation taxes on the US. Trump’s statement followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement on Tuesday that Canada will impose 25% tariffs on US goods valued at USD 155 billion.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a retaliatory tariff on the U.S., our reciprocal tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!” was the tweet made by US President Trump on social media on Tuesday.
The Canadian prime minister made the news during a speech on Tuesday. He then disseminated the knowledge via a series of remarks on X.
“Canada’s counterattack started as soon as U.S. tariffs went into force this morning. 25% tariffs will be applied by Canada on $155 billion worth of US goods. The post on X said, “Starting with $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and the remaining $125 billion in 21 days’ time.”
Trudeau said that Canada would not back down from the battle when the “country is at stake” and referred to Canada as the US’s closest ally, friend, and partner.
“Today, the United States began a trade war with Canada, which is their closest friend and ally. Although Canadians are sensible, we won’t give up easily. “Not when our nation is on the line,” the message said.
“They have chosen to launch a trade war that will first and foremost harm the American families,” Trudeau said in his address.
In his remarks, Trudeau emphasized the steps the Canadian government has made to combat the fentanyl scourge.
He focused particularly on the tariff problem in his speech, emphasizing that “there is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs today.”
According to Al Jazeera, the US president has often claimed that his tough tariff strategy is intended to increase American industry output.
Trump has already issued wide duties on steel and aluminum imports in addition to the levies placed on China, Mexico, and Canada. Additionally, he has instructed his advisors to evaluate reciprocal tariffs for any trade deal that is seen to be unfair.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump previously said in a post on Truth Social that the greatest strategy for international businesses to avoid tariffs is to relocate to the US.
