With federal elections approaching and the threat of a trade war with the US, Carney found himself in the midst of a tense situation.

He said in a post on X, “Thank you. Adding, “We are strongest when we are united,” let’s work together to create a stronger Canada.

After receiving 85.9 percent of the vote in the first round, Carney said in his victory address on Sunday night, “I will work day and night with one purpose, which is to build a stronger Canada for everyone,” according to Al Jazeera. Carney also praised Trudeau, his predecessor, for his efforts.

“Prime Minister Trudeau, thank you. For your dedication, leadership, and outstanding service to our nation.”

US President Donald Trump’s high tariffs on Canadian goods, which went into force on March 4, have caused a stir across the nation. According to Al Jazeera, Canadian nationalism and a desire for stable leadership in Ottawa have been fueled by fears of a recession.

Carney is a political rookie who worked for more than ten years at the finance giant Goldman Sachs and has degrees from Oxford and Harvard. According to Al Jazeera, he was Trudeau’s economic advisor as well.
Since running for office, Carney has made a number of general pledges, such as cutting down on government expenditure, increasing housing investment, broadening Canada’s trade partners, and temporarily limiting immigration.

“I am capable of handling emergencies. In a discussion with the other Liberal leadership candidates last month, he said, “I know how to build strong economies.”

“I have a plan, a plan that puts more money back in your pockets, a plan that makes our companies more competitive, a plan that builds a strong economy that works for you,” he was reported as saying by Al Jazeera.
Trudeau thanked his fans ‘for everything’ before he left his job.

Amid considerable resentment over his government’s handling of a housing crisis and growing living expenses, Trudeau resigned on January 6 as both the prime minister and the head of the Liberal Party.
