An increase in intrusion of Chinese military aircraft into Taiwanese territory was observed
Taipei: Between 6 a.m. (local time) on Sunday and 6 a.m. (local time) on Monday, Taiwan reported detecting five Chinese navy vessels and four Chinese military aircraft in the vicinity of Taiwan.
Two of the four People’s Liberation Army (PLA) planes breached the Taiwan Strait median line in the northern air defense identification zone (ADIZ), according to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND).
Taiwan’s MND said in a post on X that “up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today, 4 PLA aircraft and 5 PLAN vessels were detected operating around Taiwan.” Two of the planes entered Taiwan’s northern ADIZ after crossing the median line. We have kept an eye on the issue and taken appropriate action.
Notably, there has been an increase in Chinese activities near Taiwan.
Taiwan reported seven Chinese navy vessels and six Chinese planes close to its territory on Sunday.
The Taiwanese MND said in a post on X that “up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today, 6 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels were detected operating around Taiwan.” Two of the planes entered Taiwan’s southwest ADIZ after crossing the median line. We have kept an eye on the issue and taken appropriate action.
As Beijing continues to establish its claims over the island, this episode is part of a recent trend of China’s more aggressive maneuvers surrounding Taiwan, which raises worries about regional stability.
In a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi earlier on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed worries about Beijing’s pressure toward Taiwan, according to Focus Taiwan, which cited the US Department of State.
In a readout after the phone call on Friday (Washington time), State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Rubio underlined the United States’ “commitment to our allies in the region and serious concern over China’s coercive actions against Taiwan and in the South China Sea,” according to Focus Taiwan.
Rubio was also cited by Bruce as saying that the United States would seek a partnership with Beijing that “advances US interests and puts the American people first.”
