Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met with Shayra Bano of Kashipur, who became a defining figure in her court struggle against Triple Talaq and polygamy, and she thanked him for enforcing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Shayra Bano thanked CM Dhami and said that women in the state will have equal rights once the Uniform Civil Code is put into effect. She said that the adoption of UCC has created a happy environment for women in the state.
According to her, UCC will provide equality to society, which will advance the nation and the state.
Shortly after she petitioned the Supreme Court in February 2016 to outlaw polygamy, triple talaq, and nikah halala, Shayara Bano received triple “talaq” from her husband.
Following that, thousands of Muslim women across may unite in calling for the elimination of triple talaq.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, makes quick triple talaq illegal for Muslims and stipulates that the husband faces a three-year prison sentence.
On January 27, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be formally implemented in the state, calling it a historic event for both the state and the country.
January 27 would be celebrated yearly as “UCC Diwas,” Chief Minister Dhami said, underscoring the importance of this day in India’s post-independence history.
The UCC was written by an expert team after consulting 235,000 people, CM Dhami said, adding that the state government is honoring Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, and every member of the Constituent Assembly by putting the UCC into effect.
A simplified framework for the drafting and revocation of wills and supplemental instruments, or codicils, under testamentary succession is intended to be established under the Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Act, 2024.
The state administration claims that this law is applicable across the state of Uttarakhand and even to state citizens who live outside of the state.
