In Hindu mythology, Mahagauri, who achieved “Gaur Varna” by intense penance, is honored on the eighth day of Navratri. The term ‘Mahagauri’ refers to the very intelligent person. She gets on the ox.
The Hindu celebration of Navratri, which translates to “nine nights” in Sanskrit, honors Goddess Durga and her nine incarnations, together referred to as Navdurga.
Only two of the four Navratris that Hindus celebrate throughout the year—Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri—are extensively observed because they align with the changing of the seasons. Navratri is observed in India in a number of ways and customs.
Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram, marks the end of the nine-day celebration, also called Ram Navratri. The nine days of the festival are dedicated to celebrating the goddess Shakti’s nine incarnations.
In India, the festival is observed with a great deal of devotion, and the goddess in all her manifestations is honored via rituals and prayers.
