A press release claims that the number of traffic accidents in Himachal Pradesh has dropped by 6.48 percent since 2023. Compared to 2253 in 2023, a total of 2107 accidents were recorded in 2024. There was also a noticeable drop in fatalities, with 806 deaths in 2024 as opposed to 892 in 2023.

Not only that, but the number of injuries decreased from 3449 in 2023 to 3290 in 2024.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated, “The government, law enforcement, and enlightened individuals have worked together to reduce traffic accidents and deaths. The State Government has taken a number of actions to preserve important lives within the last two years.

The current state government has enhanced road infrastructure, put safety measures in place in accident-prone regions, and started focused awareness initiatives to encourage responsible driving. In order to provide accident victims with prompt medical care, it has also improved the emergency response system and bolstered the enforcement of traffic laws.

Considering the national context, this accomplishment is very noteworthy.

Road accidents and fatalities increased in India in 2023, reaching record highs with almost 1.73 lakh recorded deaths and around 4.63 lakh injuries. This corresponds to 474 deaths a day on average, or one death every three minutes. The official 2024 road accident data for India have not yet been made public but should be available soon.

“While the decline in road accidents and fatalities is encouraging, even a single life lost on our roads is one too many,” Sukhu said, underscoring the significance of road safety and the measures. In the next years, we’ll keep putting road safety first and putting creative solutions into place to further lower the number of incidents.”

The Chief Minister further asked the people of the State to assist law enforcement by following traffic laws, not speeding, and not driving harshly. According to him, the goal of creating safer roads still relies heavily on citizen involvement. He said that the State Government is dedicated to protecting human life and would do all in its power to improve road safety across the State.
