Ever since the 2013 elections, Irshad Hussain Naiku, a farm labourer from Indian Kashmir, has been longing to meet Narendra Modi for many years. After Narendra Modi, he became so desperate that he started saving money to buy a gift despite such limited funds.
After saving money for many years, he had many suggestions to give Mr. Modi the Prime Minister’s mantle. Finally, he came to the conclusion that he would stitch the traditional pheran worn by the Indian Prime Minister.
He chose the fabric very carefully but faced a challenge: he did not know PM Modi’s measurements. However, what he did not have was the size of the Prime Minister’s head. Then he realised that he and his father have the same body structure as the country’s president. So he took his father to the tailor for measurements and told him exactly what he wanted.
He said he set out from Anantnag to take the dress to Delhi once it was ready. And he reached the boundary wall of the prime minister’s residence. Barricades prevented him from entering. With such concerns in mind, he resolved to go back to Kashmir and send it through the post office.
But in the next several days, a call came unexpectedly. “You visited the prime minister’s residence, even if it was for a few seconds. Didn’t you?” the voice on the other end asked. Irshad enclosed a letter with his full name, address, and phone number along with the gift. The call came from the prime minister’s office.
When he asked for his personal details, he was told, “Look, the prime minister is wearing the gift you sent him today.” He is in Kashmir right now and speaking at a rally in Srinagar, but he is wearing the pheran you sent with him. Irshad was busy in his fields when he received a call and could not find words to respond. The gift he gave was not only accepted but also worn by the posh Prime Minister. He returned home filled with joy and asked one of his friends to check the incident on the internet. It was very exciting for him that he had the pheran sent by the person whom he admired for a long time. Irshad still remembers the day when the Prime Minister adorned himself with the gift he received.
