SP chief Akhilesh Yadav opposes the “One Nation, One Election” Bill

New Delhi: Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), rejected the “One Nation, One Election” bill on Tuesday, claiming that it might undermine India‘s democratic structure and lead to a dictatorship by consolidating power.

Yadav also attacked the plan for purportedly undermining the role of states and endangering the nation’s federal framework.

In a post on X, Yadav described what he said was the concept’s undemocratic aspect. “The term ‘one’ itself is undemocratic in democratic situations. Plurality is favored by democracy. There is no space for others in the sense of “one.” Social tolerance is broken by this. “Ego is born, and power becomes dictatorship when people feel ‘one’ on an individual basis,” he remarked.

“The decision of ‘One Nation, One Election’ will prove fatal for true democracy,” the SP President said, highlighting the possible damage the law may make to India’s federal system. It will also severely damage the nation’s federal system. As a result, regional concerns will lose their significance, and the public will continue to believe that there are significant but unaffordable difficulties.

Yadav claims that the foundation for the establishment of Indian states was the notion that areas with comparable linguistic, cultural, and geographic characteristics need to unite to create a state. “The main focus was on local and regional issues. The ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept is a plot to topple our democratic system,” he said.

Additionally, he said that the plan violates the Constitution. Through his X post, Yadav further claimed, “In a way, this is also another conspiracy to destroy the Constitution.”

He also referred to the bill’s presentation as a move toward dictatorship and voiced fears that it would eventually result in the Rajya Sabha’s dissolution. “Tomorrow, these BJP people will demand the dissolution of the Rajya Sabha as well and will give a new slogan, ‘One Nation, One Assembly,’ to bring their dictatorship,” he said.

In addition, Yadav attacked the BJP, saying that if the government was sincere about “One Nation, One Election,” polls have to be held right away. “Why wait if the BJP believes that ‘One Nation, One Election’ is a good thing? “Immediately dissolve the federal and state governments and hold elections,” he said.

Additionally, he said that the BJP was diverting attention away from pressing problems like unemployment, inflation, and health. “Is the issue of ‘One Nation, One Election’ bigger than inflation, unemployment, joblessness, and disease that the BJP is raising it?” he asked him.

Yadav also asked people to understand the proposal’s ramifications in his X post. He urged party officials, media, and leaders to inform the people about the “One Nation, One Election” bill’s purported potential to bring about dictatorship and the ultimate dismantling of the Constitution. “It is hoped that the aware people of the country and the state, the journalist friends, and the workers, officers, and leaders of all the parties who are in favor of democracy will go to every village, street, and locality and tell these things to the common people,” he said in the X post.
