SDRF teams continue rescue operation to rescue nine people trapped in coal mine in Assam

Umrangso: After nine individuals were trapped in a coal mine at 3 Kilo, Umrangso area, in Assam’s Dima Hasao district since January 6, the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, and other agencies continued their rescue efforts on Tuesday.

“The police have filed a formal complaint under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, to investigate the incident,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X (previously Twitter). It looks like an illegal mine on the surface. In relation to the matter, one Punish Nunisa has been taken into custody.

In the meanwhile, the Chief Minister asked for help and spoke with Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy about the rescue effort.

“I also asked Shri @kishanreddybjp, the Hon’ble Union Coal Minister, for help with our Umrangsu rescue effort. He immediately gave @CoalIndiaHQ instructions to fully help the Assam administration in this endeavor. “I sincerely appreciate his prompt response and assistance,” CM Sarma wrote on X.

“Deep divers from the Army are also at the site and have entered the mine as part of their rescue mission,” the chief minister of Assam tweeted on X.

Notably, Assam Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai claims that no one has been rescued as of yet.

“Up till today, we have not been successful in saving anybody. The rescue effort is in progress.The Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, and SDRF are also present. And the Navy is on its way. Here, the Indian Air Force is also stationed. This matter is being handled by the CM.Speaking to the media report, Assam Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai said, “All the officials are here, and we are making all the efforts to rescue everyone.”
