“The bill has already been distributed. The 129th constitutional amendment, which establishes the notion of one country, one election, has already been put into circulation. Since one country, one election goes against the fundamental principles of the constitution, we are vehemently opposed to it.The constitution’s word and spirit are violated.Premachandran informed the media that there are several technological problems with the one country, one poll as well.

In the meanwhile, on Monday, December 16, Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will present “The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024” to the Lok Sabha.

“The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024: Arjun Ram Meghwal will request permission to advance a bill to amend the Indian Constitution.” In addition, the bill was introduced,” the list of company said.

Two bills were proposed: one to align elections for Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Puducherry legislatures, and the other to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State assemblies.

The One Nation One election concept has drawn criticism from a number of opposition figures who claim it is unworkable and an assault on federalism.

Saying that the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ law threatens democracy, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh called for it to be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

“We want the measure to be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for debate when it is introduced in Parliament. “We oppose the bill,” Ramesh told the reporters, referring to the four-page statement that party president Mallikarjun Kharge delivered to former President Ram Nath Kovind’s committee on One Nation, One Election last year, outlining the Indian National Congress’s stance.

The Union Cabinet adopted the ‘One Nation One Election’ law on December 12, opening the door for its submission in Parliament. However, the measure sparked discussion between the opposition and governing parties prior to its submission in Parliament.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, which intends to organize simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, as well as urban body and panchayat polls, within 100 days, was notably endorsed by the Union Cabinet in September of this year.

Former President Kovind convened a high-level team that produced a report outlining the suggestions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Cabinet’s decision after it was approved, describing it as a major step to strengthen India’s democracy.
