RG Kar rape-murder: The Resident Doctors Association announced an indefinite strike, following the unresolved sexual assault and murder of a Kolkata intern doctor.
Here are the latest developments
1. In Nagpur, Maharashtra, medics and students protested outside Government Medical College and Hospital Nagpur (GMCH). FEMA’s choice to temporarily close outpatient units starting August 13 is a response to the assault and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Calls for an August 9 response have been made.
2. Dr. Akshay Dongardev labelled the incident as a significant assault-murder, akin to the Nirbhaya case. He said it’s a shame, as they join a nationwide protest. He called for termination of negligent hospital services and justice for the victim, along with a CBI probe.
3. Shepherd Shehzad, a patient, stated confusion, claiming no information was relayed by the staff despite waiting for two hours.
4. A junior doctor from RG Kar Hospital quizzed why the West Bengal CM was slow to address the crime. They would continue the strike until demands were met.
5. BMC MARD Secretary Dr. Dogardev highlighted a call for nationwide justice against the culprits. Strikes have started from 9 am, suspending non-emergency services in Maharashtra hospitals, but emergency services continue.
6. Union Minister Sukant Majumdar claimed the Chief Minister’s delay in the matter. He advised her to expedite the CBI probe.
7. A PTI report cited the intimate police connections of trained boxer Rai that led to his admission to Government RG Car Medical College and his police welfare board posting. Increased police force were deployed around the crime site.
8. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a thorough investigation and justice from the West Bengal government. An inquiry request detailing cause of the crime and ways to enhance doctors’ safety was submitted to the Union Minister.
9. A 32-year-old woman was found tragically deceased in a Kolkata government hospital’s lecture hall. Her state was disturbing. Medical staff reacted with a demand for justice. Under the banner of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at PGIMER, they marched, calling for accountability for the victim. Several major hospitals across the capital took part.
10. This included National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital, Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital, Manvi Vartan Sanstha. Others were Guru Teg Bahadur, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and IHBAS. RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital also participated.
