The Wayanad MP posted on X, calling the Center’s decision “a step in the right direction.”

She said, “I am happy that @AmitShah ji has finally decided to declare the Wayanad tragedy a ‘Disaster of Severe Nature.'” This is unquestionably a positive move and will be of considerable assistance to individuals who need rehabilitation. If sufficient funding for the same can be provided as soon as possible, we would all be appreciative.

Prior to this, the Center notified the state of Kerala that the Inter-Ministerial Central Team deemed the Meppadi landslide tragedy in Wayanad district to be of “severe nature” for all intents and purposes.

“The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) has deemed the Meppadi landslide disaster in Wayanad district to be a disaster of severe nature for all practical purposes due to its severity and magnitude,” the Union Ministry of Home Affairs said in a message.

On December 30, the Kerala Congress unit posted the message on its official social media page.

“Following a request submitted by the delegation led by Wayanad MP Smt. @priyankagandhi, the Centre has classified the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide in Wayanad as a disaster of ‘severe nature,'” the Kerala Congress tweeted on X.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Keralan MPs met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 5 and urged the Center to provide Wayanad’s landslide victims speedy help.

“We have represented the Home Minister and the Prime Minister. The region (Wayanad) has been completely destroyed. The impacted individuals have completely lost everything. Priyanka Gandhi had told reporters, “If the Center is unable to act in such a situation, it sends a very bad message to the entire country and especially to the victims.”

The worst landslide in Kerala’s history struck the state on July 30, damaging many homes and other structures and killing over 300 people. The communities of Mundakkai and Chooralmala were impacted.
