President Devendra Yadav said, “Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured the country that we are self-reliant”
New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave the country the assurance that we are self-sufficient, and his departure is a great loss to the country, Congress Delhi President Devendra Yadav said on Friday.
At the age of 92, Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at AIIMS, Delhi, from age-related illnesses. He was sent to the AIIMS Delhi after experiencing an unexpected loss of consciousness at home.
Yadav told ANI, “Dr. Manmohan Singh was the one who looked after the nation throughout its economic crises as Finance Secretary, RBI Governor, and Prime Minister. He assured the country that we are self-sufficient. The country has suffered a great loss with his demise.
Congressman Sushil Shinde expressed his sorrow at Dr. Manmohan Singh’s death.I had been admitted to his cabinet by him.
Rahul Gandhi of the Lok Sabha expressed his condolences, stating that he had lost Manmohan Singh as a mentor.
“India was governed with great knowledge and sincerity by Manmohan Singh Ji. The country was moved by his modesty and profound knowledge of economics. My deepest sympathies go out to Mrs. Kaur and her family. I lost a guidance and mentor. Millions of us who looked up to him will be very proud of him,” he remarked.
In the meanwhile, in response to the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the central government has announced a seven-day period of official mourning that will begin on December 26 across India.
According to a notification from the Union Home Ministry, the mourning period will be observed as a sign of respect from December 26, 2024, until January 1, 2025, both days included.
“There won’t be any official entertainment during the state mourning period, and the national flag will be flying at half-mast across India as it always is. Additionally, it has been agreed to give the late Dr. Manmohan Singh a state funeral,” the telegram states.
It also said that the “national flag shall also fly half-mast on the day of the funeral in all Indian missions and high commissions of India abroad.”
Singh’s three children and wife, Gurcharan Singh, survive him.
Singh, a world-renowned economist, was appointed finance minister by then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao amid the 1991 financial crisis, marking the beginning of his political career. He is renowned for having led the way in the 1990s in economic changes that had a profound impact on the economy and politics.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed their condolences on the former prime minister’s passing on Thursday.
