Let us promise to defend women’s rights, safeguard women’s interests, and consistently be a pillar of women’s safety on the occasion of Veeramangai Velu Nachiyar’s birth.”

The first Indian queen to fight against the East India Company in India was Rani Velu Nachiyar, who was born in 1730 and ruled the Sivaganga estate from 1780 until 1790. The Tamils call her Veeramangai.

After her husband and his second wife were murdered by a group of British troops and the son of the Nawab of Arcot, Nachiyar decided to take up weapons. She then fled with her daughter and spent eight years in Virupachi, close to Dindigul, under Hyder Ali’s protection.

In order to oppose the British, she organized an army and forged an alliance with Gopala Nayaker and Hyder Ali at this time.

With the military support of her supporters, Rani Velu Nachiyar battled the British in 1780 and prevailed. India saw the “first ever instance of suicide bombing” during the war, which has historical significance.

Speaking French, English, and Urdu fluently, the queen is regarded as a brave woman.
