PM Narendra Modi pays tribute to Bharat Ratna and former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur on his birth anniversary

New Delhi: On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Karpoori Thakur, the former chief minister of Bihar and recipient of the Bharat Ratna, on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

PM Modi recalled Karpoori Thakur as a leader of the people who devoted his life to promoting social justice.

“Happy anniversary of the birth of former Bihar Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Karpoori Thakur ji. The leader of the people made several attempts to promote social justice during his life. Every generation in the nation will continue to be inspired by his life and principles. On X, PM Modi wrote.

Karpoori Thakur was recognized by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who posted on X, “Respectful tributes to the people’s leader Karpoori Thakur ji on the occasion of his birth anniversary.”

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, also praised Thakur, saying that his principles and fight would always motivate us to pursue the paths of equality, justice, and service.

“Happy anniversary of the birth of ‘Bharat Ratna’ Karpoori Thakur, the great independence warrior, social justice pioneer, and former Bihar chief minister! We shall always be motivated to pursue the course of justice, equality, and service by your principles and fight,” CM Yogi wrote on X.

Karpoori Thakur was a freedom fighter and former chief minister of Bihar who was born in Pitaunjhia (now Karpoori Gram) in Darbhanga, Bihar, in 1924. In 2024, he received the Bharat Ratna posthumously. ‘Jannayak’ was the common moniker given to him for his efforts on behalf of people.

In 1952, he was admitted to the Bihar Vidhan Sabha. He put in a lot of effort for the Praja Socialist Party and the Joint Socialist Party and was a fervent supporter of socialist principles. Prior to spending two terms as Bihar’s chief minister, from 1970 to 1971 and 1977 to 1979, Thakur was a minister and the state’s deputy chief minister. He passed away in Patna in February 1988.
