PM Narendra Modi announces ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those killed in Mumbai boat accident

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the next of kin of each person killed in the boat accident in Mumbai will get an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister‘s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

“The Prime Minister has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the boat mishap in Mumbai,” PMO India said in a post on X. Rs. 50,000 will be handed to the wounded.

PM Modi reportedly said, “The boat accident in Mumbai is heartbreaking,” according to the PMO. Sending condolences to the families of the deceased. I hope the wounded get well fast. Authorities are providing assistance to those impacted.

Thirteen persons lost their lives in a terrible maritime tragedy in Mumbai earlier when the passenger ferry Neelkamal capsized while traveling from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves after colliding with an Indian Navy boat.

According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the event happened at around 3:55 p.m. when a passenger ship called Neelkamal collided with a Navy boat and overturned in the ocean.

The Chief Minister said that the relatives of the deceased will get an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

“A passenger vessel named Neelkamal capsized around 3:55 pm after colliding with a Navy boat near Mumbai, on Buchar Island,” CM Fadnavis told the reporters. As of 7:30 p.m., 13 lives had been lost, despite 101 people having been saved so far. Three Navy soldiers and ten civilians were among the dead. Navy Dockyard Hospital is treating two badly wounded patients.

For the rescue effort, the Indian Coast Guard, police, and Navy sent out four helicopters and eleven vessels. The operation is still underway, however, and further details about any missing people will be revealed by tomorrow morning. The CM Relief Fund would provide an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. The Indian Navy and the police will look into the event together.
