Opposition leader in America Rahul Gandhi alleged that the democracy that has been broken in India for the last ten years is now giving up
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, has said that India’s democracy, which has been undermined for the last 10 years, is now retaliating.
At his three-day visit to the United States of America, Gandhi, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Congress, delivered these statements to reporters at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Gandhi may have been alluding to the first two terms of the Central government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I have seen the simple removal of the Maharashtra government from our hands. I have direct witness to that. I’ve seen firsthand how our lawmakers were seduced, turned into BJP members, and bought in. Thus, after being severely undermined, Indian democracy has been attacked and is now retaliating. And I’m sure it will fight back,” the MP from Raebareli said.
“Does the election outcome give you more hope for an Indian democracy?” Someone asked Gandhi.
Yes, it does, in fact. However, just stating that Indian voters are tenacious and informed is insufficient. because a wide range of institutions educate Indian voters. Therefore, in the event that there are unequal opportunities, the voter may be very intelligent and tenacious. It’s not that important,” he said.
The results of the Lok Sabha Election 2024, which were announced on June 4, showed otherwise: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats but was unable to secure a majority. With the backing of friends in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), PM Modi took office again. The Opposition India alliance won 293 seats, diminishing the BJP’s claims, while the Congress surged to 99 seats.
Our bank accounts were blocked while we were running for office. I’m not aware of any democracy where that has occurred. Perhaps anything along those lines occurred in Syria or was before in Iraq. However, when we actually talked to our treasurer during the election, he informed us that we were out of money. You may now have a voter who is resilient. Campaigns still need to be conducted. You still need to speak with people. At the National Press Club, Gandhi said, “Meetings are still necessary.”
“I have more than 20 instances in me. In Indian history, I am the only person to be sentenced to jail for slander. Arvind Kejriwal, our chief minister, is incarcerated at the moment. In other words, one way to put it is that, absolutely, Indian voters are really strong and steady. Indeed, he does. However, Gandhi said, “The Indian voter needs an architecture to work on, which is absent.”
Gandhi, who is now on a three-day trip to the United States, persisted in criticizing Prime Minister Modi. The prime minister of a contemporary nation in the twenty-first century is saying to the populace, “I speak to God.” I’m unique from everyone else. You are individuals by birth. I’m not a biological being. God and I are directly connected. And it (for the prime minister during the elections) was game over for us. He said, “We were aware that we had defeated the prime minister.
“And the most amazing thing was that he was sworn in as soon as he entered the Lok Sabha. He implanted the Indian Constitution in his thoughts,” he said.
“Indian democracy has been targeted, severely weakened, and is now retaliating.”
Thus, it was a thought-provoking conundrum. He is, on the one hand, dismantling the Constitution. He is criticizing the democratic system. Gandhi said, “And then the Indian people made him put it in his head.”
