Maharashtra Bandh 2024: A ‘Maharashtra Bandh’ has been called by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on August 24 in protest of the alleged sexual assault of two young girls at a school in Badlapur, Thane district. The choice was taken on Wednesday at a meeting when seat-sharing for the next assembly elections was also discussed.
Who is behind the Maharashtra bandh?
Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) are the MVA’s allies.
Leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sanjay Raut, said: “FIRs have been filed against the demonstrators because people in Maharashtra are furious. In reaction to the Badlapur event, the MVA has decided to call for a Maharashtra Bandh on August 24.”
Jitendra Awhad, head of the NCP-SCP, said, “This government is unconstitutional.” A Maharashtra Bandh is required due to the increase in criminal activity.”
Balasaheb Thorat, the head of the Congress, said, “We have called for a bandh on August 24 due to the seriousness of the Badlapur incident.”

August 24th Maharashtra Bandh: Will educational institutions be closed on this day?
Since the government has not informed us of any closures, business will continue as normal. Nonetheless, establishments that typically close on Saturdays will be closed.
August 24th, Maharashtra Bandh: busses and metros
The Maharashtra administration has not backed the Maharashtra Bandh, despite calls for it from opposition parties. Buses and metros are thus anticipated to operate normally.

August 24th Maharashtra Bandh: Are Banks Closed?
Since this Saturday, August 24, is the fourth Saturday of the month, banks will be closed countrywide. The second and fourth Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and regional holidays are all closed for banking, as per RBI regulations.
Case of sexual abuse in Badlapur
In Badlapur, the event has caused a great deal of indignation. An attendant was detained by authorities on August 17 after he was accused of molesting two young girls. At the Badlapur Railway Station, there was a sizable demonstration as protesters threw stones at the police. Following the demonstration, Maharashtra Police made over 40 arrests and on Tuesday filed a formal complaint (FIR) against 300 persons for allegedly attacking trains, throwing stones, and brandishing lathi weapons.
August 21, 2024, is Bharat Bandh
In reaction to a decision by the Supreme Court, 21 organizations countrywide formed the Bharat Bandhin. The Court ruled on August 1 that states are allowed under the Constitution to divide the Scheduled Castes (SCs) into smaller groups in order to offer specific reservations for castes that are more disadvantaged in terms of social status and educational attainment.
