Kolkata rape-murder update: Protests continue, CBI begins questioning former principal
Kolkata rape-murder update: Over the weekend, there were many demonstrations in West Bengal due to the rape and death of a medical student at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. These demonstrations demanded responsibility from the government as well as prompt justice. The startling event was made public on August 9 when the young resident physician’s corpse was found within the hospital’s chest department lecture hall, displaying obvious signs of trauma. The next day, Sanjay Roy, a volunteer for the community, was taken into custody by the Kolkata Police for his possible participation in a crime that is now being looked into as a rape and murder.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will now be responsible for the institution’s security, according to an order issued by the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday, when it granted suo motu (on its own initiative) recognition of the case. In order to preserve the identity and dignity of the trainee doctor, the Supreme Court further ordered that her name, images, and videos be taken down from all social media sites.
In the meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is still looking into the accused after filing a first information report (FIR) against Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of the institution.

Dey told ANI that he was disappointed with the way the state government handled the situation and that he had made the decision to return the Banga Ratna award. Speaking to the assembly, Majumdar foresaw Mamata Banerjee’s political demise and charged her of neglecting the people of West Bengal.
“West Bengal’s student society has awoken…The people of the state will submerge Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Ganga River by removing her from office, he said.
Majumdar went on to say that while the present protest could come to an end, the BJP will not stop its agitation till justice was done. In addition, he insisted that Mamata Banerjee’s phone be taken for a probe into her position as the West Bengal Health Minister. In order to keep up the pressure on the state administration, the BJP has promised to continue holding demonstrations in the streets.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh highlighted worries about the investigation’s pace in reaction to the rapidly worsening situation. He emphasized that the Kolkata Police had only made one arrest in spite of widespread criticism. Ghosh also questioned the CBI’s efficacy and level of engagement.
CBI is questioning the former principal of RG Kar Medical College
The previous hospital principal, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, became the subject of an inquiry by the CBI. The investigation was prompted by a petition filed by Akhtar Ali, a former hospital deputy superintendent who accused Dr. Ghosh of financial misbehavior. Given the gravity of the accusations, the Calcutta High Court moved the probe from a Special probe Team (SIT) to the CBI. The CBI has been granted three weeks to submit its findings to the court, and on September 17 it is expected to provide a progress report.
It is stated that the CBI was denied entry to the ex-principal’s home for ninety minutes on Sunday when they came to interrogate him. The previous hospital principal, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, was the target of strong evidence discovered by the CBI Anti-Corruption Branch.
“There is a lot,” the CBI said when questioned about the evidence found at Ghosh’s home.
The apprehended suspect, Sanjay Roy, who is charged with the trainee doctor’s murder, also underwent a polygraph exam.
