Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: Silent protest announced at Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk today, demanding justice and better protection for health professionals
Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: In response to the rape and killing of a trainee physician in Kolkata, all Doctors’ Associations (DAs) in Delhi have scheduled a quiet demonstration for this Friday at Rajiv Chowk in the nation’s capital. They are calling for justice and better safety protocols for medical personnel.
The protest will also be attended by representatives of the following institutions: Northern Railway Central Hospital, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, RML, Safdarjung, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, and AIIMS.
As per the official notification, all Delhi RDAs have opted to halt the strike and proceed with a weekly silent protest on a common day till the victim receives justice.
On Saturday, August 31, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a dharna in which she will call for the death penalty to be applied to those convicted of the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. Let’s review the recent developments in the doctor rape case in Kolkata:
- On Friday, August 30, Mamata Banerjee emailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reiterate her demand for strict national laws and model punishment for horrible crimes like rape and murder. In a short period of time, Mamata Banerjee sent PM Modi two letters. This was the second one.
- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for more than 140 hours in relation to the doctor’s rape and murder case.
- In addition to his dubious activities after the corpse of the doctor was found in the hospital’s seminar hall, Sandip Ghosh is now being investigated by the agency for financial fraud at the hospital, for which investigators have already filed a formal complaint against him and other parties.
- In the meanwhile, a discussion between the medical personnel and the parents of the doctor that took place the morning after the death was discovered has surfaced on tape. While the viral audio tapes purport to show that the victim’s parents were informed their daughter had committed suicide, the Kolkata Police have refuted these accusations.
- Additionally distancing himself from the purportedly viral audio snippets, the victim’s father declined to acknowledge that the voice on the tape was really his. “We don’t know how or from where it (the family’s phone conversation with the hospital’s assistant superintendent) went viral,” he added. We refuse to accept responsibility for it.
- The victim’s father said, “You say so, but I do not see it,” when asked whether the voice on the phone was his. The inquiry will not be impacted by this problem.
- Sandip Ghosh’s second set of polygraph tests has come to an end as part of the CBI’s probe into the rape and murder of a female doctor at the facility. In relation to the matter, Sanjay Roy, the arrested accused, has also undergone a polygraph examination.
