Kharge gave this reply to Sitharaman’s allegation
In response to Nirmala Sitharaman’s accusations against the Congress, Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge stated Monday that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel himself penned a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru asserting that constitutional modifications are the only way to address urgent issues.
“On July 3, 1950, Sardar Patel wrote a letter to Nehru, stating that constitutional amendments were the only solution to pressing problems,” Kharge remarked during a Rajya Sabha debate on the Constitution. “As you say, we have involved ourselves in so many legal and Constitutional difficulties that we do not know how to overcome them,” Patel said in the letter. In my opinion, we will need to get down and discuss constitutional amendments very soon.
He criticized the BJP, saying, “Even Sardar Patel’s contributions have been disrespected by distorting facts.”
He said that no one has the right to disparage luminaries such as Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nehru.
“The country’s freedom was greatly aided by great leaders like Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nehru. It is not our place to judge them. However, the Prime Minister has criticized the legitimacy of his own leader, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, as well as that of Nehru, Patel, and others. He talks about people he hasn’t heard of or met. He has been so blinded by his hate of Nehru that he has questioned the Provisional Parliament, the Constituent Assembly, and the Interim Government. At the very least, Kharge should be aware of when he is attacking Nehru and when he is criticizing his own leader.
The LoP noted that PM Modi even said that Nehru introduced a constitutional amendment during a period without an elected government, although the Provisional Parliament—which was made up of members of the Constituent Assembly itself—passed the first amendment.
Mallikarjun Kharge further pointed out that India, thanks to the Congress and the Constitution, gave everyone the right to vote while many other nations did not, and women were excluded from the voting process.
“India became the only country where this freedom was granted to individuals from all walks of life as soon as the Constitution went into effect. Isn’t this Ambedkar and Nehru’s contribution? You may not even be aware of the suffering and sacrifice they made for the nation. “The significance of the country’s independence and Constitution cannot be fully comprehended by those who did not fight for them,” he remarked.
“We are accused by the prime minister of making false promises. But who is the greatest liar in real life? People have yet to get the promised 15 lakh rupees. Were the two crore jobs promised a lie or a truth? This is blatantly dishonest. The country is being misled by these individuals who make empty promises. “Name one thing that has strengthened our democracy or Constitution in these eleven years,” he added.
Kharge further underlined that the poor in our nation would have died if the Food Security Act, MGNREGA, land reforms, or bank nationalization had not been implemented.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a vicious attack on former Congress leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi earlier today, when she opened the upper house’s debate on the constitution. She claimed that the constitutional amendments they introduced were not meant to strengthen democracy but rather to protect those in power.
