Karan Johar reflects on the legacy of his iconic film
Today marks the 23rd anniversary of one of Bollywood’s most recognizable family dramas, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” directed by Karan Johar.
Thanks to its iconic language, ageless soundtrack, and star-studded ensemble, the 2001 film is still regarded as a masterpiece.
‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ was Johar’s first film as a filmmaker in 1998. His second film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Hrithik Roshan in important parts, won over hearts all over the globe.
In order to commemorate the milestone, Karan Johar posted sentimental images from the movie’s set on Instagram. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the actors, crew, and most importantly, the audience, for continuing the film’s history throughout the years.
Johar described the emotional process of making the movie as a “pinch me” moment in his article.

Twenty-three years!” he wrote. Phew, being on set with these legends both today and back then is definitely one of those “pinch me” experiences! It was my second picture as a filmmaker, and I consider myself very lucky that the whole team and this kind cast trusted me to offer a ton of khushi and gham!”
Johar’s homage was a thank-you to the millions of fans who have preserved the essence of “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” in addition to reflecting on the past.
He said, “The biggest shout out goes to the audience…the fans…our family – who continue to watch our film and recite every dialogue, dance on every song and keep this film alive in its truest sense…THANK YOU!”
When it was released, the movie, which examines themes of family, love, and separation, became an immediate hit.
The film resonated with viewers because to standout performances by Shah Rukh Khan as the adored Rahul, Amitabh Bachchan as the powerful patriarch Yashvardhan, Kajol as the vivacious and affectionate Anjali, and Kareena Kapoor as the endearing Pooja.
The film’s emotional depth guaranteed its position in Bollywood history, and songs like “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” “Shava Shava,” “Suraj Hua Madhham,” and “Bole Chudiyan” became anthems of the early 2000s.
In addition to continuing to be a favorite among fans, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” has served as an influence for next generations of filmmakers.
‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, a romantic comedy that came out on July 28, 2023, marked Karan’s return to the director’s chair after a lengthy absence.
In addition to bringing back legendary actors Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra in significant parts, the movie also featured a new duo of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
After almost five years after directing his previous film, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ (2016), Johar made a triumphant return with ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,’ which was critically and popularly acclaimed.
