India, Nepal, Bangladesh jointly inaugurate first trilateral power flow transaction
In a virtual ceremony sponsored by Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation on Friday, Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar jointly launched the first trilateral power flow transaction from Nepal to Bangladesh.
The power flow transaction, which had been conducted via the Indian grid, was launched by Kahattar, Nepali Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Dipak Khadka, and Md. Fouzul Kabir Khan, advisor of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.
A press release claims that up to 40 MW of electricity would be exported from Nepal to Bangladesh via the Indian grid.
The deal was first revealed in June 2023, when Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the former prime minister of Nepal, was in India from May 31 to June 3.
Throughout the visit, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to further sub-regional collaboration, particularly in the energy sector, which would strengthen economic ties for the benefit of all parties involved.
Union Minister Khattar said after the inauguration that the action will be advantageous to all three of the region’s nations.
Nepal has struck a deal with Bangladesh for 40 MW of hydropower as part of the Regional Cooperation for electricity Purchase Sale and Distribution and Transmission agreement between the three nations’ electricity ministries. The government of Nepal has sent power to Bangladesh via India’s transmission line. “I believe this will be advantageous for all three countries,” Khattar said.
In October of this year, the Bangladesh Power Development Board, the Nepal Electricity Authority, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam inked a tripartite power sales agreement in Kathmandu.
According to the statement, the beginning of this power flow from Nepal to Bangladesh via India is anticipated to improve sub-regional connectivity in the electricity sector.
