IMD’s Red Alert: Gandhinagar inundated, flood like situation due to heavy rains, see update

IMD’s Red Alert: “Heavy to very heavy” rainfall is expected in many Gujarati districts, including Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Amreli, and Bhavnagar, until Tuesday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast on Monday.

Hundreds of people have been forced to relocate to safer areas as a result of flooding in many coastal districts of the state. Particularly in Navsari, there was significant flooding, prompting the IMD to declare a “red alert” for the area on Monday. Other districts that saw more than 100 mm of rain were parts of the Narmada, Sirendranagar, Rajkot, Tapi, Mahisagarand Morbi, Dahod, and Vadodara.

There has been flooding, infrastructure damage, and the closure of several streets due to waterlogging in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the capital city. Heavy rains in Kutch caused the Nakhtrana-Lakhpat Highway to get flooded, creating a condition similar to a flood in the area.

• Over the weekend, severe rains battered the southern Gujarat area, forcing several hundred residents to seek shelter in the districts of Valsad and Navsari. Khergam taluka in the Navsari district received the most rainfall in the previous 24 hours with 356 mm, concluding at 6 am on Monday, according to statistics from the State Emergency Operation Centre.

• An official said on Monday that the NDRF is conducting a search operation in Gujarat’s Morbi district in an attempt to locate seven people who were washed away, along with their tractor trolley, as they were crossing a flooded bridge on a river after intense rains. In the course of a nocturnal operation close to Dhavana hamlet, ten of the seventeen people on board the tractor-trolley were saved.

• Waterlogging at the Bajva station in the Vadodara division caused delays for many trains, including the Vadodara – Ahmedabad Intercity Express and the Vadodara – Jamnagar Intercity Express, Western Railway said.

Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, has ordered authorities to move inhabitants from low-lying regions to safer places. According to his office, the South Gujarat districts of Valsad, Tapi, Navsari, Surat, Narmada, and Panchmahal have been most severely impacted by the high rains.

• Union Home Minister Amit Shah called with Patel over the recent severe rains and floods in Gujarat, gathered information about the situation, and said that the federal government will assist Patel in any way possible.

Fishermen are advised to remain home as severe weather are predicted for the Gujarati coast. IMD has issued a warning for landslides, floods, and damage to horticulture crops, according to The Media

•The Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam’s water level climbed dramatically on Sunday amid rains in the catchment regions, standing only a few meters short of its maximum reservoir capacity of 138.68 meters, according to authorities.

•The districts in South Gujarat have so far received the maximum amount of rainfall in the state—more than 105 percent—due to the current spell of rain. More than all of the usual yearly rainfall has been received by eight districts in South Gujarat and Saurashtra.

3.64 lakh million cubic feet of water were present in Gujarat’s 206 reservoirs, which is equivalent to 65% of their entire capacity. Seventy-two reservoirs were placed on high alert and fifteen on regular alert due to significant rises in water levels.

• According to SEOC statistics, east-central Gujarat has gotten 68.84 percent of the average annual rainfall so far, while north Gujarat has received 64.91 percent.
