Guwahati: Crowds throng markets to buy oil lamps ahead of Diwali

Guwahati: The Guwahati market selling oil lamps and clay pots has been decorated for the occasion in advance of the Diwali celebrations. To commemorate Kali Puja and the festival of lights, people have flocked to the market to purchase oil lamps, or diyas.

According to dealer Dilip Das, they have transported a variety of diyas from Goalpara, Nagarbera, and Sonapur in Assam to the Guwahati market.

“This year, diyas are more expensive than they were last year. We’re aiming for strong sales in the days ahead,” Das said.

According to a client named Nabarun Dutta, having enlightened diyas during Diwali is part of our cultural heritage.

“A wide variety of lighting devices are being offered in marketplaces. However, because it is part of our tradition, we have to burn diyas and support our potters,” Nabarun Dutta said.

On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared pictures from the Bijni Lakshmi Mandir’s Lakshmi Puja celebrations.

Earlier, Mission Basundhara 3.0 was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Biswa Sarma on Sunday at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalashetra in Guwahati. According to him, the goal of the Basundhara mission is to provide the state’s indigenous people land rights. While speaking at an event at the state capital’s Lok Sewa Bhawan, Sarma also introduced the Chief Minister’s Atamnirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA).

The state government gave Rs. 510 crores to 25,238 aspiring business owners under CMAAA 1.0. With 75,000 potential beneficiaries, CMAAA 2.0 is an expansion of the same program aimed at fostering entrepreneurship in Assam. The participants of this initiative will get two installments of Rs. 5 lakhs for professional courses and Rs. 2 lakhs for non-professional courses.
