Google Doodle on October 19, 2024 celebrates the groundbreaking discovery of Staurikosaurus
Google Doodle: Today, October 19, 2024, Google Doodle honors the ground-breaking discovery of the Staurikosaurus, an early theropod dinosaur that provides insight into the ancestry and development of these amazing animals.
A Staurikosaurus dinosaur is seen sprinting over an ancient terrain in the animated Doodle. It draws attention to the dinosaur’s remarkable long tail, bipedal gait, and speed and agility. The dinosaur’s sharp teeth are also included in the drawing, implying that it was a predator.
A PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES
This amazing fossil specimen was discovered in 1936 by paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Prince in the Santa Maria Formation in southern Brazil. This find—later named the Staurikosaurus—became essential to our understanding of the evolutionary history of dinosaurs.
The Staurikosaurus existed in the late Triassic era, around 225 million years ago, according to radiocarbon dating methods. This extinct predator got its name from the constellation in which it originated. It was also known as the “Southern Cross Lizard.”
SMALL BUT IMPORTANT KNOWLEDGE
Even though there is now just one known member of the species—the Staurikosaurus—the fossil record offers important new information. This dinosaur was around two meters tall and thirty kilograms in weight, which was huge for its period. Its long tail and bipedal gait imply that it is a swift predator with the ability to capture and retain prey.
A TURNING POINT
Our understanding of dinosaur evolution has advanced significantly as a result of the finding of the Staurikosaurus. Paleontologists have been able to piece together the mystery of how these amazing animals originally arrived on Earth and started their incredible journey by examining an early theropod.
A PERMANENT HISTORY
Awe and astonishment are still evoked by the Staurikosaurus, which serves as a constant reminder of the extraordinary variety and complexity of life that has lived on Earth. Let’s honor the scientists’ unwavering efforts to continue solving the riddles of our ancient past as we commemorate this important finding.
