Former Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid expressed concern over the situation in Bangladesh, said this
SP Vaid, the former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir, said that “This has to be stopped” in response to the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a priest with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), and the escalating violence against minorities in Bangladesh.
Vaid’s comments follow a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a group of retired judges’ officials and a current Member of Parliament, pleading for him to step in and address the growing violence and prejudice against Hindus in Bangladesh.
“About 75 individuals, including retired judges, Army veterans, IAS officers, forest service officers, and other distinguished citizens, have written a letter to the PM,” Vaid told ANI. In Bangladesh, Hindus are subjected to horrors. This must be stopped.
He voiced worries about the “impact” that Bangladesh’s present circumstances are having on India. According to him, the issue “is not an internal matter” and need to be brought up at the UN.
“This will have an impact on Bangladesh as well as the neighboring areas. Consider how it might affect India. It has the potential to disrupt the whole area. It’s not an internal problem. It need to be brought up in international organizations like the UN,” he said.
He also encouraged PM Modi to discuss Bangladesh’s predicament with international organizations like the UN. According to him, the neighboring nation “should” be compelled to protect minorities.
“India’s prime minister is a world leader. People pay attention to him. People will pay attention if he addresses the UN. He said that Bangladesh need to be compelled to protect its minority populations.
On November 27, PM Modi received the letter.
“It is imperative that Chinmoy Krishna Das and other religious leaders who have been wrongfully detained be released right now. Their rights to peacefully demonstrate and express their concerns should be respected, and any accusations against them should be withdrawn,” the letter said.
Additionally, the organization has encouraged the central government, headed by Prime Minister Modi, to bring the detention of ISKCON Bangladesh priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari before international bodies including the Human Rights Council, the United Nations, and other pertinent international forums.
“We demand that specific international sanctions be applied on Bangladesh, especially to those people and organizations involved in human rights abuses and religious persecution. The letter said that the purpose of these penalties should be to exert pressure on the government of Bangladesh to stop its involvement in these crimes and to defend the rights of religious minorities.
Since ISKCON Bangladesh priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on sedition charges, which sparked riots and instability in Bangladesh, the relationship between the government of Bangladesh and ISKCON has become worse.
According to the local media, a lawyer submitted a petition after the priest’s arrest requesting for ISKCON to be banned in Bangladesh, describing it as a “radical organization” that was involved in actions intended to incite communal conflict. In Bangladesh, the petition led to yet another political dispute.
