Former Chittorgarh MP Mahendra Singh Mewar passed away at the age of 83
Late on Sunday night, Mahendra Singh Mewar, a former Chittorgarh MP and member of the Mewar royal dynasty, passed away at the age of 83. Mewar dies at Ananta Medical College in Udaipur, Rajasthan, where he was receiving treatment for a persistent decline in his health.
Mahendra Singh Mewar was the father of Nathdwara MLA Vishwajit Singh and the father-in-law of Rajsamand MP Mahima Kumari. He made a big difference in the community, and as word of his passing spread, there was a widespread outpouring of grief.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his condolences on the passing of Mahendra Singh Mewar, stating that the former Member of Parliament dedicated his life to promoting and conserving Rajasthan’s cultural legacy.
The prime minister said in a post on X that the former MP devoted his life to public service and that his work on social welfare would always be an inspiration.
“The death of Mahendra Singh Mewar, a member of the Mewar royal family and a former Chittorgarh MP who made significant contributions to social and political life, saddens me much. He dedicated his life to protecting and advancing Rajasthan’s cultural legacy,” PM Modi said on X.
He threw himself all into serving the public interest. His contributions to social welfare will never cease to be an inspiration. I send my sympathies to his family and fans at this difficult time. He went on, “Om Shanti!”
The oldest son of Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar, who ruled the princely state of Udaipur from 1955 to 1971—the year the Indian government abolished royal titles—was Mahendra Singh Mewar.
In 1989, Mahendra Singh, a BJP candidate, was elected as a Chittorgarh MP. Along with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he participated in many yatras during the general election campaign in India.
