Delhi’s AQI drops to 226, declared ‘poor’ by Central Pollution Control Board

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, a layer of pollution covered New Delhi, causing the Central Pollution Control Board to classify the Air Quality Index (AQI) as “poor,” with a dip to 226.

Akshardham and Anand Vihar had the highest AQI readings, at 334, which was classified as “very poor.”

The AQI for AIIMS and its environs was 253, while levels at India Gate were 251, which was similarly classified as “poor.”

Over the last two days, Ashish Kumar Meena, a local, has seen a noticeable increase in pollution in the Akshardham region, which is creating health problems.

“The last two days have seen a significant increase in pollution here,” he said. It has caused eye discomfort in addition to choking and breathing difficulties in certain cases. The pollution levels would rise much worse after Diwali. To reduce the pollution, the government must act. Fines need to be enforced on those who burn materials in a fire. The people with respiratory issues must be going through a lot of hardship.”

“People should use more of public transportation and try to use carpooling,” said a local who underlined the value of public transportation in reducing pollution. This would assist in lowering the city’s pollution levels.”
