Death of Nepali KIIT student: NHRC’s Priyank Kanoongo blames university’s inaction for suicide

Bhubaneswar: According to Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), an inquiry found that a Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) committed suicide as a result of the university’s inactivity.

According to him, the student had told the institution about incidents of sexual assault and extortion, but the administration tried to hide the truth and neglected to call the police, which finally resulted in her untimely death.

Kanoongo told ANI, “According to the report that the NHRC investigative team sent us, the girl had complained to the university administration authorities about being recorded, blackmailed, and sexually abused. They made an effort to conceal and repress the issue. They kept the cops in the dark. The girl was compelled to end her life as a result.

Kanoongo also claimed that students of Nepali descent at KIIT suffered abuse after her passing. He went on to say that the NHRC has asked important authorities to be held accountable.

“Students of Nepali descent also suffered abuse after the girl’s suicide. At midnight, they were taken out of the hostel. At night, several of the females were removed from the hostel. Within a month, we have requested a response from the Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner, UGC, and NAAC.

Police must provide a current report. It will be necessary to develop suitable instances in the relevant parts. Corrective action will need to be taken by the Chief Secretary. The university management would have to face consequences from UGC and NAAC,” Kanoongo said.

In response to claims of an attack on students demonstrating at KIIT University in Odisha, the NHRC opened an investigation into the death of a Nepalese student on March 4.

After the third-year B.Tech student was discovered dead in her dorm room on February 16, Nepalese classmates protested, claiming that she had been abused by a fellow student and that the institution had ignored their repeated concerns.

In order to look into the death of the Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, Nepal’s NHRC has written to the Indian Human Rights Commission.
