Congress MP Manickam Tagore gives adjournment notice in Lok Sabha to discuss deportation of Indian citizens by US
New Delhi: In order to address the deportations of more than 100 Indian nationals by the US government, Congress MP Manickam Tagore sought an adjournment notice in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
“The recent deportation of Indian nationals who were identified as illegal immigrants has shocked the nation,” Tagore wrote in his notification.
“This procedure presents significant diplomatic issues in addition to demonstrating a complete disrespect for human rights. The Indian government, which has mostly kept quiet about the issue, is not significantly interfering with these efforts,” he stated.
He went on to ask why the Indian government had not denounced the cruel treatment of its citizens throughout the deportation process.
What steps is the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) taking to guarantee Indian nationals are protected overseas? Why was the use of military planes for deportations not discussed with the Indian government? What measures are being taken to guarantee the deportees’ safety and dignity? The Congress MP said.
He asked the external affairs minister to explain the “government’s position” and the measures being taken.
On Wednesday, a US Air Force aircraft carrying Indian nationals who are suspected of having moved to the US illegally touched down in Amritsar, Punjab.
A representative for the US Embassy said earlier Tuesday that the US is strictly implementing its immigration and border regulations, but that specifics could not be disclosed. According to the spokeswoman, the acts convey a “clear message that illegal migration is not worth the risk.”
“A lot of people have asked me questions on the story of a trip to India for deportation. While I am unable to provide specifics on such requests, I can state that the United States is aggressively policing its borders, strengthening immigration regulations, and expelling undocumented immigrants. A spokeswoman for the US Embassy said, “These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk.”
