Congress leader Rahul Gandhi gets bail in Savarkar defamation case
Pune: Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, was granted bail by a special MP MLA court in Pune on Friday in the Savarkar defamation case.
The head of Congress used a video conference to appear before the court. February 18 is the date of the next hearing.
After Rahul Gandhi allegedly made an offensive remark against VD Savarkar in London in March 2023, the grandnephew of Savarkar filed the complaint against Rahul Gandhi.
The case claims that Rahul Gandhi purposefully falsely and damagingly accused Savarkar in order to damage his reputation and cause him and his family emotional anguish.
The grandson of one of Vinayak Savarkar’s brothers, Satyaki Savarkar, complained to a Pune judge in April 2023 about Rahul Gandhi’s claimed defamatory remarks in response to his remarks. According to reports, these comments were made on March 5, 2023, during a meeting in London.
Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, the lawyer for complainant Satyaki Savarkar, told ANI: “Rahul Gandhi came today via video conference, and we protested that there is no such option for an accused person. There is no purpose for this facility. As a result, we raised an objection. Nevertheless, the court granted permission after taking the facts into account. He provides bail via video conference as well, and the judge has granted it. The next hearing is scheduled on February 18th.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s grandnephew, Satyaki Savarkar, told ANI in April 2023: “Rahul Gandhi visited England last month and said at one of the events that Veer Savarkar had written in his book that he and his five or six companions were beating a Muslim and Veer Savarkar had relished it. Since the occurrence is fictitious, such a statement is offensive. Rahul Gandhi and some of his supporters have been talking a lot to us about alleged petitions and pensions. In reality, there were mercy and subsistence allowance requests. We have arrived at the court.
