Chennai rain: IMD issues ‘orange’ alert
Chennai rain: On October 17, an orange signal was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for seven districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. In addition, a yellow notice has been issued for the day for a few additional areas of the state.
The Met Department noted in its most recent report that severe rains and floods are being caused by a depression over the Bay of Bengal, and that it is expected to move across northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh today.
Water stagnation has been removed in most areas, according to TN Chief Minister MK Stalin, who also said that food would be provided for free in Chennai’s Amma canteens today “to support poor and ordinary people.”
A district warning in Tamil Nadu has been issued.
Chengalpattu, Chennai, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram districts, and Puducherry are anticipated to see heavy rain.
According to the IMD report, rain is expected across southern Andhra Pradesh, several areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and southern Karnataka.
What caused the rain in Chennai and Tamil Nadu?
South India has had intense rains as a result of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, according to the IMD. Numerous regions of the state, including Chennai, have reported experiencing waterlogging. Images from Chennai showed people swimming through knee-deep water as rain caused various areas of the city to flood. After a lot of rain, murky water filled the streets and highways.
Trains, Flights, Schools, Colleges, and Bus Services Are Interrupted
• According to the Tamil Nadu government, more than 200 boats and emergency response teams had been sent out, and government offices, institutions, and schools had been shut down, as reported by AP.
• Although an official statement has not been made, schools, universities, and government offices were closed on October 16 owing to severe rain and floods. This is expected to continue today.
• Several locations experienced disruptions in bus services.
• Waterlogging caused the Southern Railway to cancel four express trains, one of which being the Chennai Central-Mysuru Kaveri Express.
• Because not enough people showed up to utilize the services, a number of domestic flights were also canceled.
