On March 3, Ranya Rao was taken into custody at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) discovered her in possession of gold. Later, the Additional Director of DRI, Abhishek Chandra Gupta, submitted a complaint, which prompted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a formal complaint.

In accordance with certain provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988, the FIR was filed.

The complaint claims that on March 6, two foreign nationals were detained at Mumbai Airport for trying to smuggle Rs. 18.92 crore worth of gold, weighing 21.28 kg, into India.

The complaint claims that two foreign nationals were detained on March 6 at the Mumbai airport for trying to smuggle 21.28 kg of gold worth Rs. 18.92 crore into India after the arrest of Ranya Rao on March 3.

On the allegation of DRI Additional Director Abhishek Chandra Gupta, the CBI has filed a formal complaint in the gold smuggling case.

In response to Abhishek Chandra Gupta’s accusation, a formal complaint has been filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 and other provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS). According to BNS 61(2), the complaint reveals the cognizable offenses under sections 7 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as modified in 20148).

In his complaint, DRI’s Additional Director Abhishek Chandra Gupta said that these incidents of travelers departing from Dubai and trying to carry huge amounts of gold suggest a “possible nexus” with a coordinated smuggling network, maybe based in Dubai (UAE).

While the two foreign nationals who were detained had previously made many trips to the Mumbai airport, Ranya Rao had made multiple trips to Dubai.

In his lawsuit, Gupta also raised the potential that other people, including public officers, were involved.
