Since 1991, when Dr. Manmohan Singh ji was first elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam, a state he served for 28 years, I have had the honor of getting to know him. Dr. Sahab never gave in to the accoutrements of power and was a living example of humility. His decency and simplicity, together with his intelligence, were always evident in all of my encounters with him. I’ve had the chance to speak with him on a number of occasions throughout his time as prime minister on Assamese problems, and each time he listened to us patiently and showed a great commitment to social issues,” he added.
He came from modest beginnings in post-partition India and held a number of notable roles while serving the country. His crucial contribution in bringing about a free market economy and putting an end to decades of regressive socialist policies will live on in the memories of a generation of Indians. The country has lost a brilliant statesman, a remarkable scholar, an unorthodox politician, and a great patriot in his passing. “Gursharan Madam, his family, and well-wishers have my sincerest condolences,” the Assam chief minister said.
