His contribution to India is something we should never forget. He established the groundwork for the growth and advancement that our nation is now experiencing. I give him my respect.”
From 2004 until 2014, Dr. Manmohan Singh was India’s prime minister for two terms in a row.
He gained respect both domestically and internationally for his leadership at significant periods in the nation’s economic history, such as the liberalization of the Indian economy in the 1990s and his work during international financial crises.
In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his sympathies, describing the death as a major national tragedy.
PM Modi hailed Dr. Singh’s achievements to India’s economic policies and called him “one of India’s most distinguished leaders” in a post on X (previously Twitter).
“India laments the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, one of its most illustrious leaders. He became a renowned economist after rising from modest beginnings. He also held a number of government posts, including Finance Minister, and throughout the years, he had a significant influence on our economic strategy,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi, who had a good working relationship with Dr. Singh while Singh was the Prime Minister and he was the Gujarat Chief Minister, too recalled their exchanges with fondness. PM Modi wrote: “When I was Gujarat’s chief minister and Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji was the prime minister, we had frequent interactions. We would discuss a wide range of governance-related topics in-depth. His humility and knowledge were always evident.
Over the course of his multi-decade political career, Dr. Manmohan Singh held a number of noteworthy roles, including Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, when he led economic reforms that revolutionized the Indian economy.
In 2004, he succeeded Atal Bihari Vajpayee as India’s 13th prime minister.
He is well known for advancing policies that modernized India’s economy and for maintaining consistent leadership throughout economic downturns.
Following his second stint as prime minister, Dr. Singh withdrew from public life after guiding India through a time of unparalleled expansion and global acclaim.
Following the Congress-led UPA’s defeat in the 2014 general elections, Narendra Modi took over as leader.
