After the violence in Jangipur, the police administration arrested 22 people

Murshidabad: Following the April 8 incident in Jangipur, the police administration detained 22 individuals and filed a suo motu case, according to an official. SP On Wednesday, Roy announced that the area affected by the violence has been subject to section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which gives “power to issue order in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger”. He stated that the area’s internet services were also interrupted.

The officer said that despite the stone-pelting, the situation is still under control. According to SP Roy, eight of the 22 “miscreants” who were apprehended have been placed into police custody for more investigation.

“Here, violence broke out yesterday. Police responded to the law and order issue by making arrests. Here, 163 BNSS is in force. Here, the Internet is blocked. Everything is in control. There had been stone-pelting, undoubtedly. Two police cars were set on fire. We have pursued all available legal options. A complaint has been filed, 22 miscreants have been detained, and eight of them are being held by the police for further investigation,” the SP said.

During a demonstration against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025 on Tuesday, violence broke out in the Jangipur neighbourhood.

After violence broke out in the Jangipur region of the Murshidabad district, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a vicious attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of failing to maintain peace and order.

Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, purportedly shared a video of the violent fights that erupted in the region on X on Tuesday.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s in charge of the department of information and technology and co-in-charge of the party’s West Bengal unit, posted the Murshidabad District Magistrate’s order imposing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, which forbids gatherings of five or more people in a public setting.

The prohibition orders will be in force for 48 hours (April 8–April 10) in accordance with the order that Malviya posted.
